Champions League: Bayer Leverkusen failed to FC Villarreal

Catch-up failed - instead, Bayer Leverkusen has passed silently by the international football stage. The Werkself also lost the quarter-finals of the Champions League with FC Villarreal 1:2 (0:1) after the Second Bundesliga was inferior in the first leg a week ago, unhappy with 2:3. This should say goodbye to coach Jupp Heynckes end of the season without a title from Leverkusen.

The 65-year-old will announce on Monday the decision on his future. Since days of a move to Bayern Munich speech. Before 19 500 spectators at the Estadio El Madrigal made Santi Cazorla (33) and Giuseppe Rossi (61) the 49th Leverkusen's defeat in the 149th European Cup game of the club's history perfectly.

The own goal by Villarreal's captain Gonzalo (82) came too late. It can, and must the Rhineland, where the first national team captain Michael Ballack in the 53th Minute was a substitute, now focus on the fight for Champions League qualification. Bayer meets on Sunday (total 17.30 clock / Sky and league!) To Schalke 04.

Leverkusen's coach Heynckes said: "It must be said objectively that Villarreal was the better team. She has played in the first half, in part, excellent football. We have no lack of bite. But because the first match we went more risk and have the board made too large. Since it falls behind, which is punished at this level.

My intention is to keep the team in second place. We want to play Champions League next year. "The next round of the Bayer-Eleven in Villarreal was indicated at any stage really. Although Bayer dictated the game but lacked the offensive despite a move to two peaks, the penetrating power.

Bayer added a shaky defense, especially Stefan Reinartz came was, as in the first leg completely off the roll. The table in four of the Primera Division acted on the other hand from a safe defensive and was highly dangerous in its raid-like counter-attacking. In the first half, tried Gonzalo Castro (8) and Renato Augusto (14) times with distance shots, for the goalkeeper Diego Lopez was not a problem.

Dangerous it was only just before the break when a free kick by Lopez Renato Augusto was bouncing forward Stefan Kiessling and the ball then sat down next to the gate. On the other side, meanwhile, spun by another striker Rossi, Bayer-defense. And almost him the opening goal had been successful.

After an enormous blunder by Stefan Reinartz was released by the Italian, but his shot dash by inches past the post (17). Just five minutes earlier Reinartz had had his problems with the lively Rossi. Only with a challenge, for which he was shown the yellow card that could prevent Reinartz worse.

Rossi put them on for a good half hour of Cazorla, who finished with no problems. In view of the mortgage from the first leg turned Heynckes to his system and was in Eren Derdiyok Kiessling and play two strikers. Ballack, however, was no place in the starting eleven. The midfielder, who had played in a 1-0 win at Mainz on Sunday had 90 minutes to get back on the bench.

Only in the second half of the 34-year-old came into the game for Kiessling. But Ballack could do nothing more. His best scene he had in the 68th Minute when he set a 20-m shot next to the gate. But distance shots were the Spaniards but otherwise little bit too. Rather, they beat themselves to ice cold.

After an error by Sami Hyypia Rossi scored the qualifying round ends 2-0. Leverkusen's Renato Augusto on page, and Lars Bender were the assets. When the Spaniards Gonzalo and Rossi earned the best scores.
