Today we talk about Massimiliano Allegri as the coach who knew how to shape the field and in the locker room, the new Milan wisely re-established and strengthened in the last two sessions of the market, by Berlusconi and Galliani. Earlier this season, however, few were betting that the young coach had Tuscan expertise and the charisma to lead a group as diverse as the absolute champion of Milan, bringing to ten games to go, in first place with five points clear of Inter penta-triple.
Today, the eulogies for the former "anchovy" in Livorno, are wasted and no one can doubt that Allegri was able to charm all the Rossoneri players with his tactical knowledge, but also with its ability to establish itself with a sincere dialogue, with a smile, whether in the dressing rooms of high society and in the Palazzo Chigi and offices in Via Turati, where, Galliani, to align the many trophies on the bulletin boards, is forced to superimpose the "ears" of some them.
But, who was gay before it prove to be a genius to pass the bench early in dall'Aglianese six years at Milan? In my, now long history of leadership, I think I have marked a milestone in the careers and lives of many players, which, for me and fortunately, in some cases, samples have also become a top level.
Since early 80's, there are many stories to tell of players, who initially were considered mere "betting", turning then into true champions from the National and some even become world champion. Each of those little books, I carry it in your mind and heart, almost with the fear of forgetting, but the story of Allegri player, although it is not the most important of all, pass before my eyes so sharp that it seems like a movie seen from a few days.
In early summer of 1991, I was called by then President of Pescara, Peter Knowles, a gentleman farmer, to raise, together with the coach Galeone, the team of Abruzzo, which was sailing in Division B, burdened by debt before. We had to bet on so many young people to balance the C, but, fortunately, a season that was to be the transition and reorganization, became a real ride in Serie A.
That summer, the coach asked me Galeone, inescapably, a player we had seen at work in Pavia, that Frederic Massara (now head of Palermo), short legs and a wing fast, suited to the form of play (4 - 3-3) of the technician. Take Massara, however, was not easy because the owners of Pavia, friends and Giuseppe Claudio Achilli, had already promised the player to Zamparini, then president of the Venice in series B.
For our project, Massara was essential and Achilli made me realize that if I bought another player of Pavia, giving it a valuation of 400 million pounds, they could fill the gap and company would have a good motivation to break free commitment to Venice. Looking at the list of players of Pavia, I noticed the name of the already 24 year old Allegri, the great master Allodi, two years before, he wanted me to watch them when he played in the Pro Livorno in Italian had become a consultant, because he believed a player with of both talent and character a bit 'light-hearted.
Such was the desire to take Massara, who Allegri (I had seen once), with such courage and imagination, I remembered it looking like Antognoni. Within hours, I sold the Piacenza midfielder Fabrizio Fioretti, housed in a shot more than he needed to buy Massara and cheerful and with a single raid, closed the transaction with the Pavia.
The screams and invective Zamparini and his late ds Bianchi (called "volcano") bounced up from the Veneto region of Abruzzo. Initially I was praised for the purchase of Massara, but after a couple of years, the real deal proved Allegri, who today would compare more to that Hamsik to Antognoni.
Galeone, when I communicated the news, he exclaimed, with a hint of irony: "Why, I asked you to pick a player and I bring them?". However, after only two days of pre-season pick, the coach Neapolitan by birth and adoption of Friuli, he confided: "Allegri midfield is the strongest I've coached in my career." The story of Allegri, through its capacity, then already clear, to be trained in the field.
While absorbed by his belief tactical Galeone, playing alongside Carlos Dunga, who arrived in Serie A, I wanted to Pescara, learned other valuable secrets. His novel as a footballer, is enhanced in the year of debut in A, of twelve goals from midfield, winning 92-93 as a player in the revelation of the top division.
This allowed me to make a big deal, convincing the young new president of Cagliari Massimo Cellino, Allegri to purchase, then the hyperbolic figure of 7 billion lire. The first encounter with Allegri Cellino, in my presence, at the Hotel Gallia in Milan, where we concluded the deal, I'm reminded today, as a cross crucial point, for the life of Allegri, between the player and the coach then today.
